Confessions of a Shopaholic: Good Things Can Come with Small Price Tags and a Certain Red-Head

By Yeari Mann

Some people may know her as the giggling flirt that steals Vince Vaughn’s heart in The Wedding Crashers or as the girlfriend of Borat.  Either way, Isla Fisher takes the reins of the newly released chick flick, The Confessions of a Shopaholic. As a cynic of “cheesy” movies, this one exceeded my expectations. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this movie was perfect to soothe any bitterness from past relationships and just spit out a laugh with some girlfriends. We, girls, have all been guilty of overbuying something, especially one that is out of our price range. I even have a record of huge credit card bills that make me cringe and panic. But, do I ever learn my lesson and never commit this shopping crime again? Ummm…let me get back to you on that.
Isla Fisher’s character, Rebecca Bloomwood, is a girl that so many can relate to. You’ll fall in love with her from the start. Yes, she is the super-nice babe who gets the nice gentleman in the end, but who cares? Who doesn’t love a happy ending? The most important thing is that she understands what it’s like to be the girl who has an addiction to shopping, even if she has maxed out all of her credit cards and owes $16,000. Desperately, she applies and gets a job at a magazine company that she eventually hopes to move up in to work for the most coveted fashion position. With awkward encounters after lying that she can speak Finnish and understands the jargon of finance, Rebecca reminds us that nothing is easy and anything can be reached with hard work and determination.
Also, another thing to love about the Shopaholic is how she understands the hard economic time right now. With people trying to save the few dollar bills that are left in their wallets, the movie turns to a different fashion direction to accommodate with frugal living. Throughout the film, Isla Fisher’s wardrobe focuses on the accessories.  Accessories such as gloves and jewelry tend to be a bit easier on the paycheck. With each florid and vibrantly-colored outfit, Fisher matches it with equally elaborate gloves, scarves, and jewelry.  So, even if you can no longer afford the fitted skirts and silk dress pants, you can re-wear past stylish clothing that you already own and just add a new accessory to stay in touch with the current fashion trend. The simplest method is to top off an already existing wardrobe from your closet with a matching colored glove or hat to brave the cold air.  Isla’s character always wears gloves that match some small patch of a color of her coat.  To not come off too gaudy and heavily colored, try to aim for colors that are the minor characters of your wardrobe whether it be the black from your thin stripes on your blazer or the violet sheen from your tights.  So, don’t let the hard economic times turn you to drive on the Fashion Don’ts—where there’s a will, there’s a way.
