Fashion Trends Spring/Summer 2009

By Chicona Kibria

Calling all fashionistas, our favorite time of the year is here! Pack away your sweater dresses, leggings, and those God forsaking Uggz!!! It’s that time of year to showcase that hot bod you’ve been working on all winter. Now that NY Fashion Week has come and gone, it’s time to reveal this season’s hottest fashion trends. From Diane Von Furstenberg, to a runway show for Barbie???, NYC’s fashion week runways exuded this season’s most prevalent looks. We saw our favorite designers as well as some “newly” favorites like Project Runways’ favorite winner Christian Siriano to our first lady’s favorite Narciso Rodriguez. All the glitz, glamour, and fashion faux pas were revealed.

Just when you were thinking about pulling out those ballerina flats and oversized dresses from last season, I am here to bring you to a halt. Spring and summer of 2009 screams femininity. The looks are all about dresses and high heel platforms. Bring out your inner girly girl with the season’s hottest looks in floral prints, beautiful bold colors, ruffles, and off the shoulder designs. For those of you who did not adhere to your new year’s resolution of hitting the gym, you will be left in the dust this season. This season you will see more women wearing sleek fitted dresses and a little less of the flowing Bohemian style dresses we saw last year.  More than ever we are seeing strapless and asymmetrical one shoulder dresses. Some of the trendiest celebrities have reconfirmed this look. From Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Rachel Bilson, to Eva Longoria-Parker we are seeing the sexiest bodies glow on the red carpets revealing their beautifully trimmed shoulders.

Pull out your razors ladies, or book your appointment for your wax, as we embrace ourselves for the return of the mini skirts, “barely there” shorts, and short dresses. Gwyneth Paltrow, Mariah Carey, Nicky Hilton, Heidi Montag, and Amanda Bynes are a few of the mini skirt, short shorts fans who strutted their stuff this season. Pair your mini with a pair of high heel platforms, or for a more relaxed look wear a flat, studded gladiator sandals. Just when you thought PETA was working full time, we are now adorned with python, crocodile, and ostrich prints. Animal prints and skins are what’s hot and by the looks of things will not be leaving any time soon.

After you find that perfect dress, it’s time to search for the perfect accessories. The gladiator sandal is back this year with embellishments to die for. No more plain and simple sandal. It’s all about leather, studs, straps, buckles, beads, and fringe? Yes, that is correct! Fringed sandals are back and they returned with a boom! Some of our favorites such as Kenneth Cole, Max Studio, Steve Madden, and Guess have taken the “eeww” look of the classic fringe shoe to a more satisfying “ahhh” look. Our favorite mega star Victoria Beckham delighted us all with the heelless platform boot this year, maybe not a look we all can pull off, however, we get the point. The higher the heel, the higher the platform, the better!  Metallics and bold bright colors complete any look. Jessica Biel, Taraji P. Henson, and Jennifer Anniston have all glowed this season in metallics and beautiful hues of purple, aqua, and yellow.

So get up and hit the pavement for some new gear! Spring is here it’s time to put your best foot forward, whether it’s Jimmy Choo or Nine West! Update your wardrobe, make a statement, and keep fashion alive!
